What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a unique, non-invasive therapy designed to stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Literally translated, the Japanese word Shiatsu means 'finger pressure'.

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork where pressure is administered by the thumbs, fingers, palms and sometimes the elbows, knees and feet along meridian (energy channels). Shiatsu aims to regulate the energy known as “Qi” or “Chi”, which flows through the meridians, nourishing the organs, muscles, glands, nerves and blood. Imbalance in this energy network can lead to fatigue, pain and illness. Shiatsu balances the functions of the client, both physically and mentally, promotes and maintains optimal health and encourages the body's natural healing system.

Shiatsu treatments have regulatory influence on the autonomic nervous system, thereby improving organ function and reducing muscle tension.

What happens in a session?

Prior to receiving your first session, you will be requested to fill out a Health Intake Form. Once completed this will be analyzed by the Shiatsu Therapist who will then create a treatment program that is suited to your needs.

During a session the Therapist applies pressure to the body along the meridians of the body with the Client sitting or lying fully clothed in various positions.

The Shiatsu treatment will tend to:

  • Get the Qi energy moving in the right direction

  • Stimulate weak Qi in the meridians

  • Sedate excess Qi in the meridians

The session usually takes 50 to 60 minutes in length.

Who can receive Shiatsu?

People of all ages, including infants and children, experience lasting, beneficial results from therapeutic Shiatsu treatment. Shiatsu therapy is an important part of a preventative or rehabilitative health care program.

It is generally not advisable for people who have serious illnesses such as heart disorders, multiple sclerosis or cancer or are in the acute stages of any disease.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of Shiatsu include:

  • Relaxation and release of tension to combat the effects of stress

  • Improved lymph flow and blood circulation which therefore boosts the immune system

  • Helps to alleviate aches, pain and stiffness

  • Stimulates the normal functioning of the internal organs

  • Increased energy

After treatment, most people experience relief from their discomforts - relief from pain, increased flexibility, calmer mood, and a clearer mind. Many people find that they sleep deeper and more restful for several nights.

Since no medicines, injections or mechanical devices are used, Shiatsu does not produce any unpleasant secondary effects other than those normally produced by the healing process.
